Beat Generation Writers/Poets

Image
I have always been fascinated with "The Beat Generation". These writers expressed what it meant to be "exhausted", "beat down" by the world. They expressed themselves via literary purge. I feel as though I connect to downtrodden and depressing works of writing, and I am drawn to the Beat writers simply because I feel as though we are kindred spirits. I was, however, born 30 years too late. The Beat Scene began in the 1950s. In a culture of rebellion and non-conformity. People looking fora "social revolution". The term "Beat" was coined by Allen Ginsberg and he chose this because the writing felt "beat up". They did not agree with the Capitalism that the country was facing after WWII. The writing is bold and straight forward. In your face type stuff that was uncommon for the time period. The "founders " of The Beat Generation met at Columbia University for the first time in the 1940s. Jack Kerouac and Alle

Try A Chapter #1

I just finished Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel and I am now torn as to what to read next. So, I have seen this "method" utilized on BookTube and I thought it might help me choose. So here goes. 1.  The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis  From what I understand, this is  book set in the 1980s and takes place at a college and these friends have no idea what they want out of life. This is supposed to be darkly humorous and feature some sexually diverse characters. This isn't a book that I would typically reach for but I stumbled onto it on Goodreads and bought it at the local used bookstore. I am excited to see what this is all about! 2.  The Secret History by Donna Tartt  I have heard this book being hyped so much and when I found it at Goodwill for $0.99...I had absolutely no reason not to get it. This is pitched as a psychological thriller of sorts. A group of misfit college kids (I'm sensing a trend?) are making an attempt to live rebelliously. What e

I can appreciate the fact that everyone loves this series, but I have never gotten into it. I know that I'm in the minority, but it had to be said lol.

We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson

We Are The Ants  Click Here For Book Synopsis This book....what can I say?  This is a story of grief and love and family and friendship....it's about really understanding our place in the universe and how insignificant we can feel at times.  We follow Henry Denton as the Main Character. He is dealing with the suicide of his boyfriend, his first real love and a whole lot of family problems as well. Henry blames himself for Jesse's suicide and is trying to cope with that. On top of everything else, Henry is abducted by aliens every so often and he is deemed "Space Boy" by the school bully, who, by the Way, Henry is having a fling with.  There are a lot of tough topics in this book. Suicide, mental illness, rape, bullying... Just to name a few. But there is an underlying hope throughout this story that shines through. I really loved this book and the stories that were told throughout. This is my first time reading a book by Shaun David Hutchinson and I will

Schizo by Nic Sheff

Image
Schizo by Nic Sheff is a YA contemporary book about a boy who experiences a psychotic break and is diagnosed with with schizophrenia following a traumatic event in the MC's life. Throughout this book, you get an inside perspective on dealing with schizophrenia.   Though this was a story that I enjoyed reading, I would have liked to see more of how the illness manifests and some more psychological explanations.  The ending has a bit of a twist which made the story more interesting.  I gave this book 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 There are some trigger warnings in this book. So be mindful if you are triggered by mental breakdown and things of the sort.
