WinterSong by S. Jae Jones
WinterSong by S. Jae Jones
This is a YA re-telling loosely based on The Labyrinth starring David Bowie.
The story follows main character, Elisabeth "Liesel". She has a sister, Kathe, and a brother Josef. Kathe has always been the pretty one and Josef is a musical prodigy on the violin. Liesel has always just been rather plain.
The children's grandmother tells them stories of The Goblin King and the realm of the Underworld.
One day Kathe goes missing and Liesel goes to look for her and finds out that Kathe has entered the realm of the Underworld and goes to search for her.
Throughout her quest, Liesel meets The Goblin King and finds out that he is searching for a bride. Thinking that it is Kathe that he wants to marry, she hellos her sister escape the Underworld. Only then does she realize that The Goblin King has used Kathe as bait to lure Liesel to the Underworld because he really wants to marry her.
Throughout the story, the reader gets to learn about Liesel and her longing to be loved and wanted but also her longing to be a composer. The Goblin King and the characters found in the Underworld aren't always good and most certainly cannot be trusted.
S. Jae Jones writes beautifully and the tale is dark and haunting and romantic.
I think this would have been better as an adult book instead of YA because it has some "steamier" scenes that could have been much more realistic had the story taken on a more adult motif.
The descriptions in this book are beautiful but unnecessary. The author spends way too much of the book going into every minute detail and that kinda made me drift away from the actual plot.
