WinterSong by S. Jae Jones This is a YA re-telling loosely based on The Labyrinth starring David Bowie.  The story follows main character,  Elisabeth "Liesel". She has a sister, Kathe, and a brother Josef.  Kathe has always been the pretty one and Josef is a musical prodigy on the violin. Liesel has always just been rather plain. The children's grandmother tells them stories of The Goblin King and the realm of the Underworld.  One day Kathe goes missing and Liesel goes to look for her and finds out that Kathe has entered the realm of the Underworld and goes to search for her. Throughout her quest, Liesel meets The Goblin King and finds out that he is searching for a bride. Thinking that it is Kathe that he wants to marry, she hellos her sister escape the Underworld.  Only then does she realize that The Goblin King has used Kathe as bait to lure Liesel to the Underworld because he really wants to marry her. Throughout the story, the reader gets to learn about Lie

Born To Love, Cursed To Feel by Samantha King (Poetry Collection)

Image
Born To Love, Cursed To Feel by Samantha King is a debut poetry collection about Love and everything that comes along with it. She writes about being cheated on, left, being in toxic relationships. ..etc. She does touch on the positives of being in a relationship as well. Poetry has always been a love of mine. I have recently just started to dive into some current poets, and I am loving it. Samantha King's writing is very relatable. I have felt similar feelings and being able to connect to someone's feelings while reading their words is something that I enjoy while reading poetry. 5⭐ on Goodreads A little about the Author: http://www.andrewsmcmeel.com/catalog/detail?sku=9781449480950

Girls On Fire by Robin Wasserman

Image
Girls on Fire is a YA contemporary novel about a Main Character Hannah Dexter "Dex" who begins to hang out with a new girl named Lacey. Lacey is your typical misfit, trouble maker. Its 1991 and the star basketball player is found dead in the woods from an  apparent suicide. The novel tells a story of an inseparable friendship between two girls, their secrets, and their faults. I really enjoyed this novel. I identified with both girls in different ways, and I sympathized with them. I haven't read many books like this and I wish I had them when I was growing up. Lacey seems to have a manipulative "hold" over Hannah, who Lacey affectionately calls "Dex". Hannah takes on the identity of "Dex" as her "alter ego" and enjoys the transformation from good girl Hannah into rebellious Dex. Dex wants to be everything that Lacey wants her to be (outgoing,  outspoken,  brave, etc...) She's always trying to impress Lacey. Sometimes I

Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey from Ginger Reads Lainey (on YouTube)   Currently Hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes (also on YouTube) Here is the link to the Goodreads group for Top 5 Wednesday: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/118368-top-5-wednesday This weeks topic is : 5 books you felt betrayed by. 1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.      *spoiler* This is the story of Susie Salmon. She has been murdered and is telling the story from "her heaven". She is trying to lead her family to her killer from beyond the grave. This was a good premises for a story. I was hoping for a bit more from the plot, and it was slow moving. But overall, I thought it was a good story. The part that caused me to feel betrayed was the ending. Throughout the whole book, Susie is trying to point her family in the direction of their neighbor (who raped and killed her) and when the family finally figures out that its him, he takes off, and ends up falling off the side of the roa

Cress by Marissa Meyer

Image
Cress by Marissa Meyer is a sci-fi retelling of Rupunzel and the third book in The Lunar Chronicles series. This was a hefty book lol. 550 pages. This follows Cinder, Scarlet, Wolf, and now Cress. Cress is a lunar who lives aboard a small satellite and is controlled by a mistress who works for Queen Lavana. Cress becomes entangled with the squad while trying to find a way out of her tiny ship and into the heart of Captain Thorne (it's rather cute!) Cress becomes a pivotal character to the mission the Cinder started. (To Overthrow Queen Levana.) I absolutely loved this book! It's my favorite in the series so far! 4🌟 on Goodreads! Cress is on the Right in the picture.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Image
Caraval is a YA fantasy novel about two sisters who live on an island with their abusive father. Scarlett and Tells receive an invitation to Caraval, a traveling performance/circus event. Scarlett is to be married soon , but Tells leaves to go to Caraval and Scarlett chases after her. Upon arriving to the island where Caraval is taking place, the sisters are part of an elaborate game. There are elements of magic and romance, and sisterhood. This book does not exhibit any circus elements at all really. It was poorly written, and the plot wasn't well thought out. I was hoping for so much more from this book. The characters were annoying and I wish there had been more circus/carnival elements instead of what there were. 2 🌟 on Goodreads.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur (Review)

Image
This is a poetry collection comprised into four separate sections. The author touches on several subjects, such as, grief, love, longing, rape, fear, sadness, and healing. This poetry collection spoke directly to my soul. So beautifully written. It's simplistic layout makes it that much better. I have dived into other poetry collections as a result of reading Milk and Honey. Honestly, one of the best modern poets of our time! 5/5 stars on Goodreads :)
