A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Image
A Monster Calls is a semi-fantastical story about a boy named Conor.  His mom is terminally ill and he is forced to live with his grandmother. Only,  him and his grandmother do not get along. Conor's father moved quite a distance away and has a new family, and Conor feels like he is alone. One night,  a tree shows up at Conor's window and takes him on a journey to teach him a lesson about grief and acceptance and finding peace within yourself. This is a dark, semi fantastical tale. I read this book fairly quickly and I would recommend it to anyone who has had to deal with grief and depression. Conor is a great character. I gave this book 4/5 ⭐on Goodreads.

Rest In The Mourning by R.H. Sin

Image
Poetry collection that explores relationships and loneliness. I really like his writing style and words of wisdom. He is the significant other of another poet I read recently. Samantha King. All in all this was a quick read and I took away a lot from it. He has become one of my new favorites.  I will definitely be buying more of his works. 5⭐ on Goodreads

WinterSong by S. Jae Jones

Image
WinterSong by S. Jae Jones This is a YA re-telling loosely based on The Labyrinth starring David Bowie.  The story follows main character,  Elisabeth "Liesel". She has a sister, Kathe, and a brother Josef.  Kathe has always been the pretty one and Josef is a musical prodigy on the violin. Liesel has always just been rather plain. The children's grandmother tells them stories of The Goblin King and the realm of the Underworld.  One day Kathe goes missing and Liesel goes to look for her and finds out that Kathe has entered the realm of the Underworld and goes to search for her. Throughout her quest, Liesel meets The Goblin King and finds out that he is searching for a bride. Thinking that it is Kathe that he wants to marry, she hellos her sister escape the Underworld.  Only then does she realize that The Goblin King has used Kathe as bait to lure Liesel to the Underworld because he really wants to marry her. Throughout the story, the reader gets to learn...

Born To Love, Cursed To Feel by Samantha King (Poetry Collection)

Image
Born To Love, Cursed To Feel by Samantha King is a debut poetry collection about Love and everything that comes along with it. She writes about being cheated on, left, being in toxic relationships. ..etc. She does touch on the positives of being in a relationship as well. Poetry has always been a love of mine. I have recently just started to dive into some current poets, and I am loving it. Samantha King's writing is very relatable. I have felt similar feelings and being able to connect to someone's feelings while reading their words is something that I enjoy while reading poetry. 5⭐ on Goodreads A little about the Author: http://www.andrewsmcmeel.com/catalog/detail?sku=9781449480950

Girls On Fire by Robin Wasserman

Image
Girls on Fire is a YA contemporary novel about a Main Character Hannah Dexter "Dex" who begins to hang out with a new girl named Lacey. Lacey is your typical misfit, trouble maker. Its 1991 and the star basketball player is found dead in the woods from an  apparent suicide. The novel tells a story of an inseparable friendship between two girls, their secrets, and their faults. I really enjoyed this novel. I identified with both girls in different ways, and I sympathized with them. I haven't read many books like this and I wish I had them when I was growing up. Lacey seems to have a manipulative "hold" over Hannah, who Lacey affectionately calls "Dex". Hannah takes on the identity of "Dex" as her "alter ego" and enjoys the transformation from good girl Hannah into rebellious Dex. Dex wants to be everything that Lacey wants her to be (outgoing,  outspoken,  brave, etc...) She's always trying to impress Lacey. Sometimes I...

Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey from Ginger Reads Lainey (on YouTube)   Currently Hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes (also on YouTube) Here is the link to the Goodreads group for Top 5 Wednesday: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/118368-top-5-wednesday This weeks topic is : 5 books you felt betrayed by. 1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.      *spoiler* This is the story of Susie Salmon. She has been murdered and is telling the story from "her heaven". She is trying to lead her family to her killer from beyond the grave. This was a good premises for a story. I was hoping for a bit more from the plot, and it was slow moving. But overall, I thought it was a good story. The part that caused me to feel betrayed was the ending. Throughout the whole book, Susie is trying to point her family in the direction of their neighbor (who raped and killed her) and when the family finally figures out that its him, he takes off, and ends up falling off the side o...
