The Crime Scene #1

Hello, my name is Peggy and I am a True Crime/Crime Fiction addict.

I feel like I am the only person I know that is completely OBSESSED with True Crime and Crime Fiction. I have no one to discuss said topics with. So, in my efforts to reach out into the cyber worlds, I will be discussing True Crime in various forms (books, movies, documentaries, podcasts...etc) and Crime Fiction (books and movies mostly). Feel free to chime in and add to the discussion or introduce me to something new!

I am going to start off with
James "Whitey" Bulger

Where The Bodies Were Buried: Whitey Bulger and the World That Made Him by T.J. English
James "Whitey" Bulger was an organized-crime Boss of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston, Massachusetts. He was born in 1929 and served his first prison term in 1956 for Armed Robbery and Truck Hijacking. While in the Atlanta Penitentiary, Bulger claimed that he and several other inmates were involved in the MK-ULTRA program, which was a program to test mind control drugs for the CIA. He claims they were given LSD, as well as a myriad of other drugs. In 1959, Bulger was transferred to Alcatraz Penitentiary and in 1962 transported to Levenworth Federal Penitentiary. One more transfer to Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary and his third petition for parole was granted in 1965. He served a total of 9 years.
Whitey Bulger was a racketeer and he claimed to only take out "criminals". In 1971, James Bulger became an FBI informant at the behest of FBI agent, John Connolly. Connolly told Bulger that in cooperating, he would be able to take out his rivals in the booking game and loan-sharks. What ended up happening was, the FBI was so focused on the people that Bulger was giving information on, that Bulger himself was able to continue his own illegal ventures. Bulger and his gang were responsible for a number of murders during this time and buried them in the South End. They also occupied a house (nicknamed "The Haunty") where Bulger and his gang would carry out murders as well.
Eventually, Bulger's associates were captured and charged with a multitude of things. Kevin Weeks, Bulgers right hand man, agreed to a plea deal in which he testified against Bulger and plead guilty to being an accessory to murder.
Several book makers agreed to testify that they had paid "protection money" to Bulger and an arrest warrant was issued under the RICO act.
Bulger fled Boston and after 16 years at large, James "Whitey" Bulger was captured  on June 22, 2011. He was 81 years old at the time of his arrest.
According to Wikipedia, "Bulger was arraigned in federal court on July 6, 2011. He pleaded not guilty to 48 charges, including 19 counts of murder, extortion, money laundering, obstruction of justice, perjury, narcotics distribution and weapons violation."
On November 14, 2013, Bulger was sentenced to 2 life sentences plus 5 years.

There is also a movie called Black Mass starring Johnny Depp as Bulger. It is one of my all time favorite movies. I highly suggest watching it!
