100 page "chance" of Night Film

I typically give any book that I read at least 100 pages before deciding to put it down. Night Film was one that I had to put down for now. The story is good, but it's moving along at a snail's pace. So I put it down, and picked up something new.

***spoilers*** This book floored me. I read it in one sitting.  This is a book that follows Wavy and Kellan and their developing relationship.  In the beginning of the story, Wavy is an 8 year old girl who's parents are meth addicts. The don't pay attention to Wavy and when they do, its in an abusive manner. She is made to believe that she is dirty and that anything she puts in her body will become dirty too. She has a little brother named Donal and she tries to keep him from being the focus of her mother's flip outs.  One night, Wavy witnesses on of her father's friends wreck his motorcycle and she goes to help him. There begins a relationship of them taking care of each other in a way.  This book touches on drug abuse, pedophilia, child abuse, and how the most unlikely of people can be each others saviors.  Kellan is much older than Wavy and in the beginning all he wants to do is protect her and take care of her. Sugar by Deidre Riordan Hall

Sugar is a book that I wasn't sure about reading. It has some triggers for me, and i was apprehensive. I'm so glad that I did read it though. Sugar is a teenager in high school. She is obese and lives at home with her verbally and phy sically abusive mother and Brother. Sugar is her mother's careta ker, bec ause, Sugar's mom is bed-bound due to extre me obesi ty. Sugar struggles with bullyi ng, self-est eem, binge eating and her general self wo rth. Enter: Even, a good look ing, slim guy who rides a motorcy cle. She obvio usly crushes on him, and he shows her that she is worth a lot more than she believes that she is. He shows her that her mother is toxic, and her brother is an alco holic brute. Slow ly, Even helps her break free of her toxic lifestyle and start caring for herself. This book tackles some tougher issues, such as grief, depress ion, binge eating and the cycle that keeps people from putt ing themselves first. 5/5 stars on Goodreads.

WinterSong by S. Jae Jones This is a YA re-telling loosely based on The Labyrinth starring David Bowie.  The story follows main character,  Elisabeth "Liesel". She has a sister, Kathe, and a brother Josef.  Kathe has always been the pretty one and Josef is a musical prodigy on the violin. Liesel has always just been rather plain. The children's grandmother tells them stories of The Goblin King and the realm of the Underworld.  One day Kathe goes missing and Liesel goes to look for her and finds out that Kathe has entered the realm of the Underworld and goes to search for her. Throughout her quest, Liesel meets The Goblin King and finds out that he is searching for a bride. Thinking that it is Kathe that he wants to marry, she hellos her sister escape the Underworld.  Only then does she realize that The Goblin King has used Kathe as bait to lure Liesel to the Underworld because he really wants to marry her.
