Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Decided to pick this up. It feels wintery...for whatever reason. I know a little bit about the synopsis, and I'm intrigued. I like fantasy books, but haven't read one in a while. So, I'm diving into this one. I'm excited to discover this world and this series.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a fantasy standalone novel. It is essentially a back story as to how The Red Queen became The Red Queen and how she became so any/aggressive. I had high hopes for this book, as my most anticipated book of 2016. However, it really fell flat for me, and I found it hard to get through . Summary: Cath wants to open a bakery, but her parents want her to marry The King of Hearts. During all of the parties, and meetings with the King, Cath falls in love with the King's Joker, "Jest". Beat Generation Writers/Poets

I have always been fascinated with "The Beat Generation". These writers expressed what it meant to be "exhausted", "beat down" by the world. They expressed themselves via literary purge. I feel as though I connect to downtrodden and depressing works of writing, and I am drawn to the Beat writers simply because I feel as though we are kindred spirits. I was, however, born 30 years too late. The Beat Scene began in the 1950s. In a culture of rebellion and non-conformity. People looking fora "social revolution". The term "Beat" was coined by Allen Ginsberg and he chose this because the writing felt "beat up". They did not agree with the Capitalism that the country was facing after WWII. The writing is bold and straight forward. In your face type stuff that was uncommon for the time period.
