Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyami (Book Review) *short and sweet*
This story....I wasn't expecting much when I first picked it up because, it was hyped so much. But the premise just drew me in.
This is a West African fantasy novel based on African folklore. It is YA, but it is very fast paced and gripping.
We follow a brother and sister who live in a poor area of a village. While Zelie is in the richer area, hoping to sell fish for money, she collides with the Royal Princess. Zelie helps the Princess escape the Royal Guard's clutches and our story begins there.
This has family dynamics, betrayal, and adventure. There is an element of insta-love which I could have done without, but, all in all I enjoyed it and will be continuing on with the series.
I have never read a fantasy based on African culture, and I absolutely loved it.
I gave this 4/5 stars on Goodreads.
